Fall Studio Tour Recap

December 30, 2008 Filed Under: Events 1 Comments

On Friday November 21, 2008 Students from Central Piedmont Community College, The Art Institute of Charlotte, Johnson C. Smith University, Appalachian State University, UNC Charlotte, and Winthrop University joined together on a "green" tour of a few design studios around uptown Charlotte. The LINX was our tour bus in helping keep our environment clean during our insightful excursion. We visited 7 studios: Eye Design, Brinkley Design, Hot Sake, Limerick Studios, Visit Charlotte/CRVA, The Pursuit Group, and Birdsong Gregory. I asked Kristin Junco, a Senior Graphic Design student at The Art Institute of Charlotte to give her perspective on the event. “Networking is the most powerful way to build professional relationships, actively foster contacts and publicize information. The Studio Fall Tour was an excellent example of the best way to know who you might want to work for one day. I could not have been more thrilled to be a part of this group! This experience not only helped…

Rob Hawse, member since 2002 President, Hawse Design Where are you from? I grew up in Wilmington, NC and was educated at NC State and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. What attracted to you to the design profession? Did you have particular mentors or experiences that opened the door to the profession for you? From a young age, I have always had a strong interest in design – architecture and industrial design peeked my interest. I come from a family of artists so I was constantly exposed to different mediums. Not only was I drawn to the beauty of design, I was fascinated by how things were made and the theories behind what attracted people to them. I was given an amazing opportunity to continue my passion in NYC and it sealed the deal for me. The School of Visual Arts combined with the energy of New York pushed me to create and reach limits I had never imagined. The school provided access to some incredibly talented teachers/ designers – Richard Wilde, Tony Pallidino,…

BOOM! Judgement Day

December 08, 2008 Filed Under: Contests 0 Comments

After months of planning, blood, sweat and a few paper cuts, BOOM! kicked off a jam packed weekend with a Friday night presentation at Byrons SouthEnd. Our esteemed judges, Drew Davies of Oxide Design, Kenna Kay of TV Land and Josh Silverman of Schwadesign each presented on the BOOM! theme – Where Creativity and Communication Collide. The evening concluded with dinner and drinks at Nolia. Judgement Day started early Saturday morning with breakfast at the Art Institute. The judges stayed busy reviewing all 440 entries with a total of 559 pieces. Let me say that again... 559 pieces! After surveying the work, 51 websites were reviewed by each judge. After a single elimination round, each website could receive up to 3 bean votes per judge. Let me add that we are in the South – only pinto beans were used for voting. From the 124 promotional design and advertising entries, 29 winers were selected. Then the judges selected winning entries – five editorial designs, five environmental…

BOOM Judges Eve: Three Perspectives: Where Creativity and Communication Collide

December 06, 2008 0 Comments

The Friday evening of November 7th was a rich experience. BOOM Judges Drew Davies, Kenna Kay and Josh Silverman landed in Charlotte with their sleeves rolled up and pencils sharpened, ready to share their worlds and their time with our Chapter. I found myself pondering ideas familiar, yet new as they unpacked and unfolded new places for us to revel in. First up was Drew Davies of Oxide Design out of Omaha. Drew demonstrated through vibrant case studies the power of breathing new life into such classics as Target, Rodeos and Renaissance Festivals, merging forces of brand awareness, humor, design principles and story telling to reach and create new audiences. Drew's dimensional creativity has allowed him to live in the source of where good design emanates: the box that pops off the page and opens to reveal a new frontier that is at once familiar, fruitful and spectacularly beautiful. Next, Kenna Kay of TV Land dialed the knobs of Multimedia development, allowing us to follow her personal…
