Kevin Brindley, AIGA Member Since 2010 Creative Director, Art Director & Wannabe Storm Chaser Work By Kevin   What attracted you to the design profession? Did you have particular mentors or experiences that opened the door to the profession for you? I was attracted to the design profession at a very early age. For as long as I can remember, I always spent large amounts of time as a kid drawing and painting. I was fortunate enough to attend a public school district that placed value on fine arts, so I was able to take several art classes and electives in elementary school all the way through high school. This helped to reinforce my passion about being creative, explore different aspects of the industry, and begin to formulate ideas of a career path prior to applying for college. I owe a great deal of gratitude to my parents for recognizing my passion for design, for providing endless opportunities to pursue that passion, and for supporting my decision to pursue design as a career…

Jim Mountjoy, AIGA Member Since 2006 Designer - LKM | Instructor - Central Piedmont Community College What’s your proudest accomplishment? Professionally there isn’t one, there are three. First, I’m perpetually in love with design. Maybe that’s not an accomplishment but I believe real love takes work and sacrifice. Second, being named to The University of North Carolina’s Hall of Fame for my contributions and work in communications and design will always rank right there with my third, which is the ongoing joy of helping others create great work. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Cellist. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Several years ago my wife and I were in Rome. We were relaxing one evening in the Piazza Navona watching the crowds and enjoying the lazy twilight. At a table near us soft laughter from a group of elderly ladies gave a wonderful texture to the night. I couldn’t resist the moment so…

Chapter Spotlight: AIGA Cleveland

AIGA Cleveland Number of Members: 300+ Year Founded: 1968 1. What advice can AIGA Cleveland offer design students about to enter the workforce? Be Patient. We don’t want to jump on the “it’s a bad economy” bandwagon, but it’s a bad economy. Your first job might not be the one you envisioned while in school, but use this time to gain work experience, increase your knowledge of design theory, and solidify your process. Be patient with your work. Too often recent graduates focus on creating work that will be featured in annuals or blogs, rather than focusing on solving a communication problem for the client. Take initiative. Volunteer for things you are passionate about, even if they are not design-related. The people you meet will help your career. Network through AIGA and other like organizations. It's always helpful to widen your network and make connections. Be smart. Look how much our world has changed in the last five years. The landscape of communication…

Kimberly Diedrich, AIGA Member Since 2006 Graphic Designer, Image Resource Group and Freelance 1. Where are you from? Originally from Upstate New York (Adirondacks). My family moved to the Charlotte area when I was in grade school and I've lived here ever since. 2. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? I would love to be a Dog Psychologist/Behaviorist. I've always had a love for animals, but never paid much attention to training or behavior until I got my dog a year and a half ago. He was a handful to say the least, but he's come a long way! It's surprising how receptive they are once you communicate to them in a way they understand. 3. What attracted you to the design profession? Did you have particular mentors or experiences that opened the door to the profession for you? When I first went to college, I was studying Biochemistry @ Clemson University. I wanted to go into Pediatrics from the time I knew what a career was. That plan fell through when I realized…
