Vooruitgang, a rock-Show posters exhibit

AIGA members are invited to attend a reception for local graphic designer Benjamin Gelnett, whose posters of rock concernts will be featured from Nov. 3 through Dec. 31 in the Elizabeth M. Guinan Gallery at The Art Institute of Charlotte. The reception will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on
Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Gallery, Three LakePointe Plaza, 2110 Water Ridge Parkway, Charlotte.

Since graduating from the Savannah College of Art & Design in 1999, Gelnett has worked professionally as a graphic designer, creating corporate identities and commercial artwork for companies such as Bombardier Aerospace, Hunter Fan Company and Reynolds Alcoa. While corporate design provided a somewhat stable living, the creative aspect of the work wasn't always as rewarding. Gelnett began creating posters for friends’ bands, various venues and promoters hoping to set themselves apart from the standard fare.

“Vooruitgang” represents the culmination of the past 5 years and more than 100 posters that Gelnett has created for bands like Q and not U, the Melvins, Deerhunter, Black Lips and many more. It also signifies a significant progression from cheap, black-and-white photocopied flyers to limited-edition screenprints and digital promotions. Gelnett now works in the marketing department of Fort Mill-based Muzak, creating sales collateral and promotions for a wide variety of initiatives and events.
