Kenn Compton, Member Since 1990
Chair: advertising + graphic design, CPCC
1. What’s your favorite font?
Baskerville
2. Where do you get your inspiration from?
Looking around, reading outside my comfort zone, keeping a sketchbook.
3. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I have a list of more than 100 alternative career paths that I would like to eventually explore. My current favorite is to be a tugboat captain. However, research indicates that there is not much demand for moving barges along the Catawba River these days, so the opportunities are scarce. Still, anything is possible.
4. What would people be surprised to know about you?
Back in the 90s, my lovely wife and I wrote and created picture books, six of which were published by Holiday House of New York, NY. All of them were modestly successful, taking us to elementary schools and libraries across this great land of ours. Sadly, due to changes in the industry, our books eventually went out of print and we retired from the business. We did self-publish a paperback version of our last book and sell tens of them each year on Amazon.com.
5. What are you currently working on?
Advertising + Graphic Design is fortunate to have some really interesting and talented folks associated with the program as advisors, faculty and students. Together, we are reinventing how design is taught, focusing on Thinking and Listening, as well as Making. Our ultimate goal is to build the best 2-year design education program on the planet. (A small college in Sweden currently holds that title.)

I've known Kenn for several years. He's creative, insightful, an 'out-of-the-box' thinker. I'm sure he's sharing that creative passion and talent with his students. CPCC is lucky to have him!
