Membership Spotlight: Josh McGlinn

Josh McGlinn, AIGA member since 2009
Creative Director, MCG Studio

1. What is your favorite movie and why?

There are several movies that I have as favorites and all of them for different reasons. One of them is "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Tim Burton's creative side really gets to shine in the look and feel of the characters. It's a fantastic story and it still holds up today. I'm also a big Danny Elfman fan and when Halloween roles around you can always catch me playing this soundtrack over and over.

2. If you could be any super hero, who would you be and why?

Without a doubt it would have to be Superman. I grew up watching the Justice League and all of the Superman movies with Christopher Reeve. I think my fascination with Superman was the fact that despite his obvious advantage with super powers, he still treated people equally and believed in humanity. Plus he could fly. Seriously, how cool would that be?

3. What would peope be surprised to know about you?

Almost all of my business comes from word of mouth and recommendations. My only marketing is an online portfolio and a Creative Hotlist account. With that, I have been able to work on projects for Rolling Stone, Harpo Productions, Sega, Clemson University, Marvel Comics, HGTV, Pepsi, NetFlix, and a number of other well known brands. Having clients recommend me is by far the best compliment I could ever receive.

4. How and why did you get involved with AIGA? Approximately how long have you been involved with the organization?

I got involved with AIGA in order to find out more about the design community here in Charlotte. I think we produce some great work here in the Queen City and I would like to see that reputation grow. I feel we could create a stronger community, particularly with freelancers. I've been a member since early 2009, though it's something that's been on the "To-Do" list for over two years. I try to attend as many events as I can. I'd say I attend the morning Buzz Events pretty regularly so you can usually catch me there.

5. What are you currently working on?

Actually many things, but my most ambitious project is that I am developing a coworking space called Collective Giant. Comprised of freelancers and small one or two person shops, the goal of the space is to provide a work environment where creatives can share ideas and collaborate on projects. The long term goal is to become a creative hub where meetups, conferences, classes, and other events can be held and grow a healthier creative community. We've been able to grow interest by hosting CLT Jelly events every Monday around town, which helps to bring telecommuters and freelancers together one afternoon a week.
