Gage Mitchell begins his Living Spree!

April 28, 2008 Filed Under: Chapter News , Member Spotlight 0 Comments

The day after I moved here in the summer of 2006 I attended my first AIGA Charlotte event, a morning BuzZ about the AIGA standards of practice. I had no idea what to expect but I knew that AIGA was my ticket to professional connections & hopefully friendships. Gage was the moderator that day & made me feel very welcomed. Eventually I got to know Gage a little more by seeing him at events and getting involved with his Programming Committee. Soon after, we became friends and then, in 2007, coworkers. Needless to say, I have spent some serious time with him between AIGA events, participating on the AIGA Charlotte Board, work and hanging out on the weekends. And although I have only known Gage for a little under 2 years, I have become very fond of him in that time. I am sure those of you who know him agree. I think he brings a certain level of fun and enthusiasm to everything, in addition to being a very humble and outstanding designer.

When he told me that he & his, then fiancee, Jen, were thinking about moving to Thailand I was excited for them but bummed for myself, our office & AIGA Charlotte. Luckily for all of us it took them a little longer to sell their condo then they had hoped so we had time to prepare for his absence. But at the beginning of March it sold and in a rush of mail forwarding and tag sales, they were off.

So, April is the first month of their new life. They have been visiting cities in the U.S. with a special stop in Eureka Springs, Arkansas to get married at a bed & breakfast. After completing their U.S. tour, they are off to Thailand where they hope to immerse themselves in the culture and stay as long as they can afford to. They sold all of their belongings & embarking on a more simplistic life filled will new adventures at every turn. Who knows, maybe we'll all be reading their tell-all travel book in a year.

I think I speak for the AIGA Charlotte Board when I say we will miss Gage dearly. He contributed so much to the success of our chapter. His passion for the organization and the profession definitely shows everyday. Who knows, maybe an AIGA Charlotte satellite chapter in Thailand is in our future.
