President, Hawse Design
Where are you from?
I grew up in Wilmington, NC and was educated at NC State and the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
What attracted to you to the design profession? Did you have particular mentors or experiences that opened the door to the profession for you?
From a young age, I have always had a strong interest in design – architecture and industrial design peeked my interest. I come from a family of artists so I was constantly exposed to different mediums. Not only was I drawn to the beauty of design, I was fascinated by how things were made and the theories behind what attracted people to them. I was given an amazing opportunity to continue my passion in NYC and it sealed the deal for me. The School of Visual Arts combined with the energy of New York pushed me to create and reach limits I had never imagined. The school provided access to some incredibly talented teachers/ designers – Richard Wilde, Tony Pallidino, Milton Glaser, Sal DeVito and Ed Benguiat to name a few. They all nurtured and inspired my raw talent and helped solidify the respect and interest that I have for design to this day.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
In addition to creating Hawse Design, it would have to be my family. I have an amazing wife (we met in 6th grade) that has stood by my side and supported me for many, many years. I have 3 beautiful children, whose passion for life and inquisitive minds continue to inspire and motivate me.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give up. Never give up on your goals and never give up on yourself. Hard work and perseverance will carry you through the tough times and charter a great course for the good times.
What are you currently working on?
We have just wrapped up a new site and are putting the finishing touches on a re-brand for our own materials. Now more than ever we see a real need for brands to have clear conversations with their customers. We have put ourselves to that same test. We have presented our work in a way that illustrates our ability to align entire brand programs through both graphic and environmental disciplines. We are excited about helping companies find their voice and speak with clarity in the New Year. Check it out for yourself. www.hawsedesign.com
