Why Brand Obama Will Win
By Jamey Boiter
AIGA Charlotte interviewed Jamey to be the November Membership Spotlight. Here's what he had to say:
What attracted you to the design profession? Did you have particular mentors or experiences that opened the door to the profession for you?
I planned to be an architect. So I took an introductory graphic design class, and fell in love with the idea of visually communicating a point of view. My instructor/mentor Tom McPeak let me work for him as a studio assistant. He had several older brand standards, story boards from his days of art directing for a CBS affiliate in Kansas City and other great evidence of what being a graphic designer entailed. After declaring my intentions to be a graphic designer, Tom talked me into transferring to design school from Clemson to get my BFA.
What’s your favorite typeface?
I know it’s probably cliché, but I think Helvetica. Any font that can make it to the MOMA is a friend of mine. Helvetica has been very, very good to me.
What is your favorite word?
Nefarious. It’s such a polite villainous word.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“I’ve got one word for you. Plastics.” No actually, my Dad told me to always hire people who were capable of replacing you. And I pretty much have. I do have and have had some incredibly talented people work for me over the past 20 years. And they’ve always made me look better.
What sound or noise do you love?
The sound our oldest Springer, Jake used to make eating saltine crackers.
