Designers from across the state came out this weekend to celebrate the Carolina's most creative design at AIGA Charlotte's BOOM! Gala and Exhibition. The BOOM! competition had over 440 entries of which our judges selected 96 amazing winners. All winning work was displayed at the Gala for attendees to view as they mixed and mingled with our cross-Carolinas crowd. Attendees consistently remarked on the incredibly high caliber of work that was displayed -- North Carolina we should be proud! The Gala's opening reception was followed by a video presentation of the competition's awards. AIGA Charlotte Board member, Trent Edwards cleverly combined the awards presentation with kinetic type interpretations of audio quotes from Debbie Millman's radio show Design Matters. So, the days are counting down until the unveiling of the winners of this year's BOOM! design competition. While I can understand the excruciating agony it must be to keep waiting to see if your work was selected, on the other hand I've appreciated the luxury of time it gave me to get around to penning some thoughts on judging the show. First let me say that coming out to judge the BOOM! entries was a fabulous experience. The city of Charlotte is truly a crown jewel, and Carolyn and all of the hosts from AIGA Charlotte made us feel right at home. (Not to mention the support provided by Scott McClure and AIGA Raleigh.) Shane and his team ran an efficient and seamless judging weekend, and I have no doubt the exhibition will come off without a hitch. It was an honor and a pleasure partnering with the lovely Kenna Kay and the suave Josh Silverman to judge the show. After months of planning, blood, sweat and a few paper cuts, BOOM! kicked off a jam packed weekend with a Friday night presentation at Byrons SouthEnd. Our esteemed judges, Drew Davies of Oxide Design, Kenna Kay of TV Land and Josh Silverman of Schwadesign each presented on the BOOM! theme – Where Creativity and Communication Collide. The evening concluded with dinner and drinks at Nolia. Judgement Day started early Saturday morning with breakfast at the Art Institute. The judges stayed busy reviewing all 440 entries with a total of 559 pieces. Let me say that again... 559 pieces! After surveying the work, 51 websites were reviewed by each judge. After a single elimination round, each website could receive up to 3 bean votes per judge. Let me add that we are in the South – only pinto beans were used for voting. AIGA Charlotte is proud to welcome the fifth biennial BOOM! design competition to the Queen City. AIGA Charlotte & AIGA Raleigh are partnering to recognize the creative thinking of Carolina designers. BOOM!, our biennial design competition, invites you to submit your most imaginative design solutions and celebrate the rewards of inspired thinking. Designers from North Carolina and South Carolina will have the opportunity to enter their best work, which will be judged by a nationally recognized panel of design professionals. Judging will take place in November 2008 followed by a “Dinner with the Judges” where the judging panel will present their work. An exhibition of the winning entries will be held in Charlotte on Saturday, April, 25, 2009. Please mark your calendar: All entries must be received by Friday, October 24, 2008.
