Saturday morning was delivered in my coffee cup, dark and steamy. I piled into the car and headed out to the Lynx to meet fellow Board members Taylor, Rachel and her husband, Steve. The starting line, at the 485 stop, found several teams for the Green Hands Scavenger Hunt already milling about, pulling awake; hesitant, bleary eyes alternately eying the sky for a glimpse of cooperation. Smiling, alert and willowy men greeted me with strong handshakes, wide smiles and twinkling eyes. I was at the beginning of a fundraiser race for Hands on Charlotte Day to compete to finish a series of environmentally-themed volunteer tasks and gather clues. AIGA Charlotte's team discussed our strategy: no running, no elbowing, no cussing out other teams that pushed us out of the way. Not us. As Creative Professionals we would run a clean ship, all the way. We carefully eyed the map, noting the red landmarks and proximity to the Light Rail Line. We looked at each other, silently nodding in solidarity. Captain…

I have had the honor of attending the AIGA Leadership Retreat for past three years. After a couple years of attending, chances are that things are going to get repetitive. There are only so many leadership exercises you can go through before you start to do some of the same things. You can mix things up by leading a break-out session – as I did for developing content for chapter websites. The 2009 AIGA Leadership Retreat in Portland, Oregon however was not a rerun. In fact, it bucked any kind of trend that was going. Like its monicker, it truly was a 'Sea Change.' I, along with my fellow attendees from AIGA Charlotte, Carolyn Colonna, president, Trent Edwards, events director, Rachel Martin, membership director, and Joseph Schlosser, chapter ambassador represented AIGA Charlotte in what will hopefully be marked as a turning point in AIGA's history to becoming not just a professional association for design, but a global design movement. What do I mean by a global design movement?…

This past weekend AIGA Charlotte Board members Banks Wilson, Rachel Martin, Taylor Nall and I attended AIGA's National Leadership Retreat in Omaha, Nebraska. The Retreat is a opportunity for AIGA Board members to receive training and inspiration, as well as, connect with Board members from across the country. It is attended by 3-6 Board members from every Chapter, as well as, AIGA's National Board members. I was invited to present a Success Story on Charlotte's diversity of Events. Our presentation discussed the seven event series Charlotte offers and showcased the branding created for each of these series. The hook of our presentation was our Project Mullet initiative. Over the past year our Chapter has been concentrating on creating a balance between the professional needs of our members and need to keep our offerings fun and inspiring. Business in the Front and Party in the Back. Our presentation used a Mullet Meter to show where each event series fell on a spectrum between "business…

In mid-April, AIGA Charlotte held a roundtable discussion with a small group of its members ranging from students to seasoned designers. The main goal of the roundtable was to explore how to encourage members to feel comfortable and become more actively involved in the AIGA community and to explore what else members are looking to AIGA to provide to facilitate their professional growth and deepen their connection with the organization. We asked a handful of questions and received quality feedback from the group. Some main points we learned that our members are looking to AIGA to provide were: - Build awareness of AIGA in the community and bridge the gap between business and design by educating the local corporate community that design has a big value and an impact on business. - Join efforts with the Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations to lead in educating local businesses and the community about environmental practices of sustainability…

The day after I moved here in the summer of 2006 I attended my first AIGA Charlotte event, a morning BuzZ about the AIGA standards of practice. I had no idea what to expect but I knew that AIGA was my ticket to professional connections & hopefully friendships. Gage was the moderator that day & made me feel very welcomed. Eventually I got to know Gage a little more by seeing him at events and getting involved with his Programming Committee. Soon after, we became friends and then, in 2007, coworkers. Needless to say, I have spent some serious time with him between AIGA events, participating on the AIGA Charlotte Board, work and hanging out on the weekends. And although I have only known Gage for a little under 2 years, I have become very fond of him in that time. I am sure those of you who know him agree. I think he brings a certain level of fun and enthusiasm to everything, in addition to being a very humble and outstanding designer. When he told me that he & his, then…

Three years ago, I was attending my first HOW Conference in Chicago. In the mist of wall to wall sessions, I found myself sitting in a conference hall listening to Sean Adams’ presentation. Although entering the session with no idea of who he was, I left the session completely inspired. I couldn’t stop thinking about all the different design theory played out in intricate charts and how strong of a speaker he was. Upon return to Charlotte, I attended my first board meeting as incoming Vice President a couple weeks later. To this day, I remember the animated conversation I had with our events team asking them if we could find a way to bring Sean Adams to Charlotte. Time past and then at the National Leadership Retreat last year, Sean Adams was introduced as the incoming National President. That once distant thought of having Sean come to speak in Charlotte suddenly came back to life. Though now it was even better. What if we could get THE Sean Adams, of AdamsMorioka, and the…
