Chapter Spotlight: AIGA Idaho

AIGA Idaho Number of Members: 89 Year Founded: 2007 1. Tell us about AIGA Idaho’s Mentor program. Our mentor program is called “Mix / Mentor” and is currently finishing it’s sixth semester with our AIGA Boise State University student group. These events have always been a great experience! The student group develops a game or system for how our professional members are paired with a student member. We ask that each mentor spend at least one hour per month with their mentee. It might be a coffee meeting, studio tour, press check, or review of current projects. We leave it up to the student to drive the topic and schedule of each session. The program has been a great success and has given students a solid benefit to becoming a member. It has been a rewarding experience, and a way for our professional members to give back. We have heard many success stories from students and are proud to be a part of the program at Boise State University, where we have our strongest…

Chapter Spotlight: AIGA St. Louis

AIGA St. Louis Number of Members: 350 Year Founded: 1989 1. What is your chapter's proudest recent accomplishment? This past March, we held our inaugural charity event – Love Crush – that raised $4,500 for the American Heart Association. The evening event featured a silent auction of more than 40 artworks by nationally-known illustrators and designers from St. Louis and around the U.S. and Canada that considered and grappled with the theme of "LOVE." In addition to the original work, metal hearts were provided to twenty artists that used the blank templates to create unique pieces that were also featured in the silent auction. In addition to cocktails and canapés, the event established a "kids' area" for creating their own love-inspired artwork. To document the event and to help promote future cause-related events for our chapter, attendees were encouraged to visit the photo booth. Love Crush was a great way to showcase the value of design, give back…

Adam Rouse, AIGA Member Since 2008 Account Executive, Belk Printing Technologies How and why did you get involved with AIGA? Approximately how long have you been involved with the organization? Fall of ’08. AIGA is the perfect organization to meet and befriend Charlotte’s design community. Graphic designers like to challenge and be challenged - creating those intriguing print projects that generate traffic for their clients. As an account executive with Belk Printing Technologies, I find the most joy in working closely with my clients to offer solutions and fresh ideas that can help to make their designs the best they can be. Certainly, repeat business, i.e. monthly and quarterly publications, are key for maintaining sales volumes, but it’s those unique, first run projects that make my career so enjoyable. Add to that, getting feedback that a new project or campaign was successful at generating the desired end result, well, that excites me! What’s your proudest…

Eat Your Greens :: Landfill Field Trip Recap

May 18, 2010 Filed Under: Events 1 Comments

When I was preparing to tour BFI Landfill, I had this vision in my head of what it would look like. The picture was a huge hole in the ground, carved out of the side of a mountain and bigger than several football fields. In my head, it was filled with anything and everything. I saw bikes, tires, plastic bottles, bags, food scraps and packaging material. I saw recyclables too. I’m quite certain this preconceived notion and fear was brought to life in my mind because of the unregulated dump that existed in my hometown during the 1980s. But boy, I was wrong. Instead, I left the landfill feeling educated and informed about my waste. First a little economics lesson as surprisingly, trash and economics go hand-in-hand. Recycling came to be in the Northeast because they were running out of space for landfills. States were paying lots of money to ship their garbage to the Midwest and South. Here in Charlotte things were different. We didn’t have the space limitations and so, recycling…

Spring Printer Tour Recap

May 13, 2010 0 Comments

By the time Benjamin Franklin was seventeen, he was a fully skilled printer. Have you ever wondered what a work day was like for him, or what a work day is like in 2010 for printers in our area? Recently, thanks to AIGA and to Anne Kouguell, student services coordinator of AIGA, a group of about thirty students and a few recent graduates had a chance to find out. On April 16, a sunny Friday, the group met in front of Integraphx on Michael Wylie Drive in Charlotte, for a day-long tour of printing businesses. Participating students came from UNCC, CPCC, the Art Institute, Winthrop, and Appalachian State. The account manager for Integraphx, Sid Wood, met us with a smile. Integraphx has between 30-35 full-time employees, runs two shifts and is celebrating its 30th year in business. The building is modern, reminded me of a ship in harbor moored along a grassy bank under large trees. Inside, it was airy with blue and orange dots making a splash against white walls. Mark Burrell, who is in sales,…
